Tell us a little bit about your experience. For starters, why did you choose the program that you did?
Being a nursing student there is a limited number of options when it comes to studying abroad. I have always wanted to travel but was intimidated by the expenses that were involved, but knew I would regret not going somewhere while in college. When hearing about this newer program in Rwanda and all the amazing experiences the students had last year, I decided to look more into the program. I am so happy I had the chance to go to Rwanda and live in a beautiful country and meet so many welcoming locals!

What did you gain from the experience?
From this experience I have learned to slow down in life. Before going abroad I don’t think I truly appreciated each day, and honestly took each day for granted. I learned in Rwanda that each day is a gift and not to rush them. There were many instances where I had to take a step back and realize that if my day didn’t go as planned not to stress about it but instead realize that everything would work out. In America we are so set on schedules and to do lists, and we need to learn to have a go with the flow mentality, with this life can be lived a lot more peaceful and simple.

What unique Experiential Global Learning opportunities did you encounter during your time?
I got to spend an entire day with a group of women in the village learning more about what they do day to day in their communities. The women greeted us with hugs and smiles and I felt so welcomed to their home. They dressed us in their traditional clothing, and then we got put to work. While working the women all sang a song to keep the spirits up, which they told us they often do when working long days in the fields. We also fed the cows, fetched water, and enjoyed a traditional African meal. The landscape held the most beautiful green hills that surrounded the village, I don’t think I could ever get tired of that view. I couldn’t stop smiling because the whole day was amazing. An experience I’ll never forget!
How has Experiential Global Learning helped you to understand and appreciate your program’s field of study?
Global learning has allowed me to immerse myself in a whole new healthcare system. I was able to witness similarities and differences between US healthcare and Rwandan healthcare. It is amazing to see how healthcare is always evolving and striving to do better to help those who need it most. In Rwanda I learned innovative ways they have adapted to transporting medical supplies to rural communities. Trips that used to take 3 hours due to the hills and twisting roads in the country, can now be delivered in less than 10 minutes with the use of drones and parachutes.
What would you say is your most memorable moment from the trip?
The most memorable moment from this trip I would say would be seeing my first birth while at clinical. Just in general seeing a new life come into this Earth is very touching, but being able to be in the room with the new mother and father is so beautiful. I’ll never forget when the doctor greeted the newborn by saying “happy birthday” a memory I’ll never forget.
Tip(s) you’d give for future students participating in a program or those who are just starting to think about an experience
I can’t say this enough but don’t let the fear of traveling push you away from going abroad. You have to learn to get outside of your comfort zone to go and experience the world. There are so many places to explore and people to meet, but that can only happen if you push yourself to do it. Again traveling can be intimidating but EGL tries to make it as smooth as possible and answers any questions you may have. You don’t want to look back on your life and say I wish I traveled more and saw more, instead do it now, go and study abroad!
